Chicago’s Defence Sets the Tone in Seattle Blowout

Simmons Makes an Immediate Difference
Jeffery Simmons needed only one defensive series to announce his arrival in Chicago. The newly acquired defensive tackle recorded a sack on Seattle’s opening possession, helping the Bears establish control in a convincing 34-17 victory over the Seahawks on Monday night.
Chicago acquired Simmons from Tennessee last week in a major deal that included two first-round picks. His first performance in a Bears uniform quickly made the investment look worthwhile. He finished with six tackles, two tackles for loss, three pressures and a pass deflection, while coach Ben Johnson described his influence as “profound.”
The Bears’ defence restricted Seattle to 252 total yards and allowed the Seahawks to convert only one of 11 third-down opportunities. Simmons said he focused on executing each play instead of thinking about the trade package or the attention surrounding it.
His presence also lifted the rest of the roster. Receiver Rome Odunze said Simmons’ work on third down brought energy to the sideline and raised the intensity for Chicago’s defence and offence alike.
Williams and Swift Keep Chicago in Control
Caleb Williams delivered a composed performance against one of the NFL’s strongest defensive units. The Chicago quarterback completed 24 of 34 passes for 247 yards, finished with a 71 per cent completion rate, took just one sack and avoided turnovers.
Williams’ steady play helped Chicago reach scoring range throughout the night. D’Andre Swift handled the finishing duties, scoring three touchdowns on short runs. His 1-yard plunge in the third quarter extended the lead to 20-9, while his final touchdown made it 34-17 with 4:41 remaining after Seattle gave the ball away.
Johnson praised Williams for staying composed while managing one of the team’s more demanding game plans. The quarterback did not allow pressure or sudden momentum changes to disrupt his decisions.
- Chicago opened with a 17-play, 80-yard drive.
- Williams completed the opening touchdown pass to Luther Burden from one yard out.
- Swift scored three times on short rushing attempts.
- The Bears reached 6-2 and never trailed.
Seattle’s Playoff Margin Shrinks
The loss dropped the defending Super Bowl champions to 4-4 and marked their third defeat in four games. It also ended Seattle’s 30-game streak of avoiding a loss by more than four points in the regular season or playoffs, a run that ranked as the fourth longest of the Super Bowl era.
Sam Darnold completed 17 of 34 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns. His late interception, however, gave Chicago excellent field position and helped set up Swift’s decisive score.
The Seahawks also struggled to run the football. Even with three-time All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson in the lineup and Zach Charbonnet and Jadarian Price returning from injury, Seattle produced only 81 rushing yards.
Guard Grey Zabel said the Seahawks must improve quickly at the line of scrimmage. A stronger ground attack would reduce the pressure on Darnold and give Seattle’s receivers more favourable situations.
- Jaxon Smith-Njigba produced Seattle’s best early play with a 43-yard reception from Darnold late in the first half.
- Jason Myers had a 33-yard field-goal attempt blocked at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
- DeMarcus Lawrence forced a fumble on Colston Loveland.
- Darnold answered with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Cooper Kupp, followed by a two-point conversion that made it 20-17.
- Chicago responded with a scoring drive before Darnold’s interception ended Seattle’s comeback hopes.
A Quiet Change for Williams
Williams also made a small adjustment away from the main action. After reportedly receiving fines totalling about $35,000 over the previous two weeks for displaying unauthorized branding, he covered the logo on his Caddix cleats.
For the Seattle game, Williams wore plain black footwear with no visible logo. He explained that the change was intended to reduce distractions and keep attention on the team during an important week.
