How Pittsburgh Controlled the NFL’s Paris Premiere

The Pittsburgh Steelers made history at Stade de France on Sunday, defeating the New Orleans Saints 16-10 in the NFL’s first regular-season game played in France. The victory lifted Pittsburgh to 5-2, while New Orleans fell to 2-5 after an offensive performance defined by limited rushing production and missed opportunities.
For the Saints, three moments shaped the result: only 18 rushing yards, Daniel Carlson’s missed 52-yard field goal, and Tyler Shough’s interception inside the red zone. Pittsburgh converted the crucial turnover into points and protected its lead through a scoreless fourth quarter.
Three Plays That Turned the Game
New Orleans controlled enough of the passing game to remain competitive, but the Saints could not sustain balance. Their ground attack produced just 18 yards, leaving the offence heavily dependent on Shough, who attempted 38 passes.
That imbalance became especially damaging near the goal line. During the third quarter, Steelers linebacker Payton Wilson read a short pass intended for Chris Olave and intercepted it near the 11-yard line. Shough later accepted responsibility, saying the throw needed to be placed farther outside.
Pittsburgh immediately capitalized. Chris Boswell converted a 39-yard field goal, giving the Steelers a 16-10 advantage that they never surrendered.
New Orleans had another chance to narrow the gap in the final quarter, but Carlson pushed a 52-yard attempt wide right. Head coach Kellen Moore said Carlson’s late arrival in France, which was connected to the impending birth of his child, did not cause the miss. The club planned to review its kicking operation during the bye week.
New Orleans Found Success Through the Air
Although the running game collapsed, Shough delivered an efficient passing performance. He completed 30 of 38 attempts for 278 yards, one touchdown and one interception. His most important completion came late in the second quarter, when he found Devaughn Vele for a one-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal to make the score 10-10.
Alvin Kamara remained a reliable outlet, catching seven passes for 57 yards. After the final whistle, Shough told teammates that the Saints were only a few plays away from winning. That assessment reflected a close game, but it also highlighted how costly the failed run game and red-zone mistake became.
New Orleans had entered the contest ranked second in the NFL with 16 touchdowns on 19 red-zone possessions, according to Sharp Football Analysis. Against Pittsburgh, however, the Saints could not finish enough promising drives.
Pittsburgh’s Defence Provided the Difference
The Steelers did not overwhelm New Orleans with a high-scoring attack. Instead, their defence kept the Saints to 10 points and produced the game’s most significant takeaway.
Wilson’s interception stopped a drive that had reached scoring range and shifted the pressure back onto New Orleans. Linebacker Kaden Elliss praised Shough’s leadership after the game, but said the defence needed to create more three-and-outs and generate additional turnovers.
The Saints’ inability to run also made Pittsburgh’s defensive assignment simpler. With just 18 rushing yards, New Orleans became easier to predict in key situations, allowing the Steelers to focus more aggressively on the passing game.

Why Stade de France Was Chosen
Stade de France was constructed for the 1998 FIFA World Cup and can accommodate more than 80,000 spectators. As France’s largest stadium, it offered the NFL the scale required for a major international launch.
The venue does not have a permanent sports tenant and is used for a wide range of events. It has hosted nearly 40 events during the year, including competitions connected with the 2024 Olympics and three UEFA Champions League finals.
Before the football game, crews adapted the playing surface by replacing the stadium’s natural football pitch with a hybrid field. The system combines natural grass with synthetic fibres to improve durability for the different demands of an NFL contest.
Security Remained a Major Consideration
France experienced widespread protests beginning on September 18, including demonstrations related to school conditions. The Associated Press described the unrest as among the country’s most serious in years.
NFL executive vice-president Peter O’Reilly said the league increased security measures during the visit. Despite the concerns, the NFL did not seriously consider cancelling the game or moving it to another site.
What the Paris Game Means for the Saints
The international event was particularly significant for New Orleans because the Saints hold the NFL’s assigned marketing rights in France. The club has also created French-language social media channels to connect with supporters and build recognition beyond North America.
Owner Gayle Benson was among the visitors who met French President Emmanuel Macron. Their discussion included the game itself and the possibility of developing a longer-term NFL presence in Paris.
Winning would have strengthened that effort, but the Saints instead returned home with a losing record and renewed questions about their offence. Jan Woska, the club’s international relations liaison, has emphasized that sustained success on the field is essential for growing local interest.
American football still faces a crowded sports market in France. Woska said the sport ranks 11th in popularity, behind activities including judo, swimming and fencing.
Flag Football Offers a Growth Path
Flag football is central to the league’s international plans because it removes tackling and is scheduled to debut at the 2028 Olympics. NFL executive Brett Gosper described the format as a major part of the league’s strategy for attracting new fans.
The Saints are also involved in supporting a French tournament. The winning team receives a trip to New Orleans, giving participants a direct connection to the franchise and the wider NFL experience.
New Orleans Enters the Bye Week With Major Questions
The Saints now have time to examine their offensive structure before returning to action. General manager Mickey Loomis had already asked supporters to remain patient with a young, developing roster, but the Paris defeat added urgency to the discussion.
Moore said the organization must evaluate every aspect of the team when asked whether coaching or personnel changes could follow. The most immediate concern is the rushing attack: an offence cannot consistently succeed when it produces only 18 yards on the ground.
New Orleans has not qualified for the playoffs since the 2020 season. The Paris game provided a historic stage, but Pittsburgh left with the result, while the Saints brought home the same unresolved issues that had followed them into France.
