How Milwaukee Turned a Long Wait Into a World Series Run

How Milwaukee Turned a Long Wait Into a World Series Run

The Milwaukee Brewers are returning to the World Series for the first time since 1982 after completing a remarkable four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Their 6-4 victory at Dodger Stadium in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series erased an early four-run deficit and ended the title hopes of the two-time defending champions.

Jackson Chourio caught the final fly ball near the left-field warning track, setting off a celebration among Brewers players and the travelling Milwaukee supporters in attendance. The World Series opener is scheduled for October 23 on FOX.

A Comeback Built on Timely Power

Los Angeles was expected to hold the advantage in the power department, but Milwaukee flipped that script throughout the championship series. The Brewers hit seven home runs compared with only one for the Dodgers, and two late blasts decided the clincher.

  • Garrett Mitchell launched the go-ahead solo shot in the sixth inning.
  • David Hamilton added an insurance homer in the ninth.
  • Milwaukee’s bullpen protected the lead through the final innings.
  • Chourio completed the win by tracking down the last deep drive.

Mitchell’s homer came after Milwaukee had fallen behind 4-0. Hamilton’s ninth-inning drive provided breathing room before the Dodgers’ final opportunity ended in Chourio’s glove.

From a Four-Decade Memory to a New Generation

The last time Milwaukee reached the World Series, Bob Uecker was part of the radio broadcast team. However, the famous announcement often associated with him was actually delivered by his broadcast partner, Dwayne Mosley.

During the deciding game of the 1982 American League Championship Series, Uecker left the booth to prepare for the celebration from the clubhouse. When Rod Carew hit a ground ball to Robin Yount, Yount’s throw reached Cecil Cooper and the fans at County Stadium rushed onto the field. Mosley made the historic call announcing Milwaukee’s World Series berth.

Forty-four years later, another generation heard the Brewers claim a pennant. The call from Jeff Levering, who once shared the booth with Uecker, gave the moment an added emotional connection for longtime fans.

Milwaukee milestone Result
Regular-season wins 103, a franchise record
National League Division Series Three victories over San Diego
National League Championship Series Four straight wins over Los Angeles
Total meaningful wins in 2026 110 through 170 games

Yelich Finally Gets the Result He Wanted

Christian Yelich has experienced several painful playoff exits against the Dodgers. Los Angeles ended Milwaukee’s 2018 season in Game 7 of the NLCS, defeated the Brewers again in 2020, and swept them in the 2025 championship series.

This season carried a different feeling. Yelich, the longest-serving hitter on the roster, was named captain by the organization. He repeatedly emphasized that the current club should not be defined by the previous year’s disappointment, and the players backed up that confidence with a complete postseason performance.

Milwaukee’s victory also reversed last year’s result in spectacular fashion. The Brewers became the first team in 103 years to be swept in one postseason by an opponent and then sweep that same opponent the following October.

A Team That Wins Without Depending on Homers

The 1982 Brewers were known as “Harvey’s Wallbangers” because they led the majors in home runs. The current club reached the World Series by taking a very different route.

Milwaukee finished the regular season tied for second-last in home runs, yet scored the second-most runs in baseball. Long at-bats, aggressive running and constant pressure became the foundation of the offence. Outfielder Sal Frelick described the approach as forcing opposing pitchers into exhausting battles.

The sudden home-run surge against Los Angeles made the achievement even more unexpected. A team built around contact and pressure used the Dodgers’ own anticipated strength against them when the series mattered most.

Why the Pennant Feels So Significant

The Brewers’ success is the product of more than one postseason. Over the past decade, only the Dodgers, Astros and Yankees have posted better regular-season winning percentages than Milwaukee. Since Pat Murphy became manager three seasons ago, no club has won more consistently.

The franchise’s modern turnaround began after years of frustration. When Mark Attanasio’s ownership group took over before the 2005 season, Milwaukee had just completed its 12th consecutive losing campaign. A .500 record in Attanasio’s first season felt like a breakthrough, while the 2008 playoff appearance ended a 26-year postseason drought.

Earlier struggles included a second-half collapse in 2014, a managerial change in 2015 and considerable turnover throughout the organization. One frustrated supporter even sent a blue-frosted cake to the club after two early-May victories, sarcastically congratulating Milwaukee for no longer holding baseball’s worst record. Some staff members ate it despite understanding the joke.

Assistant general manager Karl Mueller, who joined the organization in 2004 and once helped scout players from VHS tapes, said the pennant was difficult to absorb. President of baseball operations Matt Arnold allowed himself to enjoy the achievement briefly before turning attention to the four wins still required for a championship.

Forty-Four Years of Meaning

After Milwaukee won Game 3, Attanasio called 92-year-old franchise founder Bud Selig at 10:50 p.m. Central time. Selig was too excited to sleep and kept describing the team as remarkable.

The 44-year wait also carries a connection to Hank Aaron, who wore No. 44 and hit the final home run of his 755-homer career 50 years ago. Aaron and Uecker later supported efforts to build Miller Park and retain major-league baseball in Wisconsin’s smallest media market.

Several plays from this postseason have added to the sense that this run was meant to happen:

  • Ty France’s fly ball bounced off the roof and landed in Chourio’s glove during NLDS Game 1.
  • Garrett Mitchell made a crucial catch on a deep drive from Manny Machado in the Division Series clincher.
  • Jake Bauers, who chose not to retire in 2024 after his wife became pregnant, produced a breakthrough season at age 30.
  • Milwaukee won six comeback games in its first eight postseason contests.

Supporters Followed the Brewers Across the Continent

The Brewers’ fan base made itself visible throughout Dodger Stadium and stayed after the final out to watch the team receive the Warren C. Giles Trophy. Some supporters made extraordinary last-minute journeys to be there.

Joe Stolarczyk watched Game 3 at Hog Creek Bar & Grill in Mosinee before deciding around 1 a.m. to fly to Los Angeles. His brother David Stolarczyk and sister Mary Pilz joined him after friends failed to answer. The family bought tickets while travelling to a flight from Minneapolis and reached seats behind home plate before batting practice ended.

Joe had been living in Alaska during Milwaukee’s 1982 run, making the trip especially meaningful. Lifelong friends Dave Wuest of Atlanta and Murray Williams of Orange County also attended together. They have known each other since kindergarten and still remember the heartbreak of Milwaukee’s 1982 Game 7 loss to St. Louis.

Yelich described the travelling crowd as electric. That support will be needed again when the Brewers begin their first World Series in 44 years.
