Quarterback Decisions Are Moving Fast

A handful of teams have already sharpened their plans at the most important position. In Minnesota, the surprise signing of Kyler Murray has pushed J.J. McCarthy into a narrower lane, with Murray now set as the Week 1 starter. That leaves McCarthy trying to make the most of extra preseason work, especially with a chance to restore some trade value if the Vikings decide to keep exploring options.

Cleveland has taken a different route. Rookies and Depth Players Are Pushing Upward

The most encouraging part of the summer has been the number of young players forcing their way into the conversation. Ty Simpson impressed in his Rams debut by staying efficient and making the most of Sean McVay’s creative play-calling. Carson Beck also turned heads in the Hall of Fame Game, which may speed up Arizona’s thinking at quarterback.

Elsewhere, Fernando Mendoza has created early noise in Las Vegas and could eventually test Kirk Cousins’ grip on the job. Ja’Kobi Lane gave Baltimore another reason to be optimistic after scoring in Week 1, and Zavion Thomas produced the loudest highlight of the preseason so far when he turned a short backup-quarterback play into a 97-yard touchdown. Health Concerns Keep Changing the Picture

New coaches and new systems are also leaving a mark. John Harbaugh’s arrival in New York has brought a harder edge and a more physical identity, while Chicago’s offence under Ben Johnson has already looked dangerous even with reserve players handling much of the work.
